Lumen Christi is an independent Catholic school with a governing board. As an independent school, Lumen Christi is neither governed nor funded by the Archdiocese. At the same time, Lumen Christi has express consent from the Archbishop to identify itself as Catholic, and Lumen Christi recognizes the authority of the bishop over Catholic education in his diocese.
Lumen Christi differs from a parish school where the pastor has authority over the school and the school board serves in an advisory capacity. The fully governing board at Lumen Christi, which goes back to the four families who founded the school in 2002, is consistent with the model of The National Association of Private Catholic and Independent Schools (NAPCIS), and we believe it is a great strength of Lumen Christi.
The primary role of the board is to “uphold and sustain the mission of Lumen Christi Catholic School” and to ensure that Lumen Christi has the plans and resources in place to carry out that mission. The board hires and oversees the Headmaster, who directs the administration and faculty and leads the efforts of the entire school community; serves as the school’s primary representative to students, parents, and the larger community; and is responsible for day-today management of Lumen Christi Catholic School.
The board operates under by-laws adopted in 2003 and amended in 2010, 2013, and 2019. The bylaws specify that the board will have between five and eleven members. Additionally, the Headmaster and President of the Parent Faculty Association may serve as nonvoting ex officio members.
